How Does Technology-Enabled Active Learning Affect Undergraduate Students' Understanding of Electromagnetism Concepts?

چکیده
Educational technology supports meaningful learning and enables the presentation of spatial and dynamic images, which portray relationships among complex concepts. The Technology-Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) Project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) involves media-rich software for simulation and visualization in freshman physics carried out in a specially redesigned classroom to facilitate group interaction. These technology-based learning materials are especially useful in electromagnetism to help students conceptualize phenomena and processes. This study analyzes the effects of the unique learning environment of the TEAL project on students’ cognitive and affective outcomes. The assessment of the project included examining students’ conceptual understanding before and after studying electromagnetism in a media-rich environment. We also investigated the effect of this environment on students’ preferences regarding the various teaching methods. As part of the project, we developed preand posttests consisting of conceptual questions from standardized tests, as well as questions designed to assess the effect of visualizations and experiments. The research population consisted of 811 undergraduate students. It consisted of a smalland a large-scale experimental groups and a control group. TEAL students improved their conceptual understanding THE JOURNAL OF THE LEARNING SCIENCES, 14(2), 243–279 Copyright © 2005, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.

Community-based, Experiential Learning for Second Year Neuroscience Undergraduates.
Service learning is becoming a keystone of the undergraduate learning experience. At Stonehill College, we implemented a service learning course, called a Learning Community, in Neuroscience. This course was created to complement the basic research available to Stonehill Neuroscience majors with experience in a more applied and "clinical" setting. The Neuroscience Learning Community is designed...
متن کاملAn Active Learning Approach to Teaching Undergraduate Introduction to MIS Course
The undergraduate Introduction to MIS course is generally taught as a core course in business schools to introduce information systems concepts. In addition, the course serves as an important entry point to recruit MIS majors. For instructors wanting to do well in the MIS course, use of traditional lecturing alone may not be entirely effective. This paper proposes an active learning approach to...
متن کاملLearning Electromagnetism with Visualizations and Active Learning
This chapter describes learning electromagnetism with visualizations and focuses on the value of concrete and visual representations in teaching abstract concepts. We start with a theoretical background consisting of three subsections: visualization in science, simulations and microcomputer-based laboratory, and studies that investigated the effectiveness of simulations and real-time graphing i...
متن کاملOnline Case Based Self-Study Modules as an Adjunct Learning Tool in Otorhinolaryngology: A Pilot Study
Background/Need for innovation: Undergraduate students in Otolaryngology are on the lookout for easy modes of learning which can help them understand concepts better as well as score more in examinations. A need was hence felt to introduce a new learning resource to supplement traditional teaching-learning methods. Methods: Digital, case based self–study modules were prepared using all open sou...
متن کاملHow Technology and Collaboration Promote Formative Feedback: A Role for CSCL Research in Active Learning Interventions
Recent evidence for the effectiveness of active learning interventions has led educators to advocate for widespread adoption of active learning in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses. Active learning interventions implement technology and collaboration to engage students actively with the content. Yet, it is unclear how these features contribute to their effe...
